Online Security: The Foundations of Web-Based Business

Author: Sam   Last updated on: May 19, 2024    28 Comments

As online shopping continues to flourish, with thousands of shopaholics opting to buy online rather than head for the high street, now is as important a time as ever to emphasise the significance of online security. As online commerce shows a continued increase in market share, it’s now responsible for £466.1million of sales per week, according to the Office of National Statistics.

security websites

As a business owner, it’s crucial to ensure shopping opportunities for potential customers are simple and streamlined. To increase your turnover, you need customers to visit your website and stay there, rather than abandon their visit in favour of somewhere else. An integral factor that will increase the probability of them utilising your site is the use of SSL security, such as a San Certificate or similar form a reputable Certificate Authority. Providers including Symantec can ensure that your business will be protected by a SSL certificate that provides consumers with the peace of mind they need to add things to their online shopping cart.

If you want your business to progress online as well as off, the welfare of your potential customers needs to be at the forefront of your mind. You wouldn’t use an insecure site to buy your wares, so why should your customers do such a thing?

A SSL certificate is all you need to show your customers you mean business. The aim of SSL is to ensure that any sensitive data transferred from browser to server is encrypted and protected, so that if third parties were ‘eavesdropping’ on the connection, they won’t find anything readable. The presence of the SSL will also provide the familiar https:// in the address bar and the padlock icon on the browser that fills internet users with confidence.

Investing in a SSL certificate is one of the fundamental changes that you can make to your online presence. By doing so, your business has every chance to prosper online.

The ssl will always be important, especially to maintain the security and integrity of the website. However in underdeveloped countries it is difficult and the cost of ssl is still expensive, so many sites do not have and end up paying on google seo for example!

Thanks for sharing, it’s useful to know that these days most standard hosting packages come with SSL as standard. Makes implementation much easier than it was 5 years ago.

    Hey Sam,

SSL is definitely a must when building and launching any website. The significant thing about it is that most website hosting provider nowadays includes a free SSL when you host your site with them.

    Cheers,

I live in Washington State. I use cannabis regularly. Washington has prevented marijuana businesses from selling their products online because they think they will lose their ability to track each sale… Which is kind of absurd.

What worries me the most, is that the WA Government may only allow marijuana businesses to conduct online sales if they have the ability to unmask all of the customers’ personal information.

If we don’t secure our digital privacy rights, we will no longer have a free internet.

SSL certs are required of course but it doesn’t make your online business secure alone. I personally feel more secure when using a marketplace instead of sharing my personal info and credit card info with a small business.
